Call the YMCA at 662-3100 for session dates.FEE: YMCA Members: $40, Program Members: $56 FIRST AID/CPR/AED CERTIFICATION COURSE (AGES 11 & UP)Individual certification course for First Aid, CPR & AED taught by American Red Cross certified instructors. First Aid training includes the basics of wound care, bleeding control, and bandaging and provides information about poisoning, sudden illness, and how to care for other injuries. CPR training includes how to respond to emergency situations, recognize the signs of a heart attack, and provide care for an infant, child or adult who stops breathing, is choking, or whose heart stops beating. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training is a proven life-saving tool when deployed correctly and early on after the onset of cardiac arrest. radKIDSFREE 10-hour personal empowerment safety education program for children offered on alternate months for children ages 5 to 7 or ages 8 to 12. Program is committed to reducing school violence by providing youth with realistic options, knowledge and skills to promote safe and healthy environments. Fun, activity-based programs include lecture, safety drills, muscle memory, exercises and dynamic simulation providing a multi-sensory rich learning environment. Curriculum topics include Internet safety, touching, predator tricks, physical resistance strategies against abduction and bullying prevention. Class is offered in partnership with The Family YMCA, Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board and Los Alamos County DWI Program.Session dates are the 2nd and 3rd weekend of each month; 2nd and 3rd Fridays from 4 to 6 pm; 2nd and 3rd Saturdays and 2nd Sunday from 1 to 3 pm. Call to see what ages are offered per month. YMCA EARTH SERVICE (YES) CORPS (AGES 11-17)Flexible program combines volunteer service, environmental education, and work experience in a program for youth that focuses on trail improvement, landscaping and watershed restoration. The supervised program, a partnership between the YMCA, the Delle Foundation, and Los Alamos County, begins in June and ends in August. Program includes First Aid and CPR instruction, training and work safety seminars, team-building field trips, and an end-of-summer campout. Character Counts values will be emphasized. Participants choose a staff-approved work schedule Monday through Thursday mornings. The program can be abbreviated, but cost will not be pro-rated. Participants will be eligible for Presidential Service recognition and a YES Corps Certificate of Promotion. Registration packets available in March. Space is limited. Registration closes at the director's discretion. FEE: YMCA Members: $146, Program Members: $204TAE KWON DO (AGES 8 & UP)Those with disabilities are encouraged to join this class! Known as Korean Karate, this study of kicks and punches emphasizes the use of the feet for unarmed combat. Tae Kwon Do is about self-control-over the mind, the body, and the spirit. Class has membership in the World Tae Kwon Do Association under 9th degree Grandmaster Duk Song Son. Students will learn basics, forms and three-step. Free-style (sparring) is non-contact. New students must observe a class before registering with the instructor for the first time.STARTS: First of each month with new students accepted quarterly (new quarters start Oct., Jan., April, July). JUJITSU (AGES 7-12 & 13-ADULT)Jujitsu is a non-competitive, self-defense art that incorporates the blocking, striking and kicking techniques of Karate and the grappling and throwing techniques of Judo. The underlying principle of this art is to produce maximum effect with minimum effort. Emphasis is on blending with an opponent's energy and controlling it, hence the name Jujitsu or "gentle art". Students will develop fluid, yet powerful techniques through proper body dynamics, breathing, relaxation and awareness. This is an excellent class for sports that involve using an opponent's weight.DAY & TIME: Ages 7-12; Sundays, 5:00-6:00 p.m.; Ages 13 & up: Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30 p.m. MONTHLY FEE: Ages 7-12: YMCA Members: $18, Program Members: $25.
