Climbing Wall Policies And Information

The gym is open to climbers of all ages. All climbers must have a signed liability/helmet waiver. Those under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign for them. All climbers 14 & up must pass a certification test to top-rope or lead climb belay. Children 12 and under must wear a helmet and be accompanied by an adult during scheduled and open gym hours.

 

Climbing Wall Birthday Party (Ages 6 & up)

Give your child a birthday party to remember at the YMCA’s indoor climbing gym. After climbing for 1 and ½ hours, there will be a half hour of parent-led time for cake, pizza or ice cream and opening presents. Parents provide the food. No previous climbing experience is necessary. Safe, experienced climbers are on staff for the parties.
The cost is $117 for parties of 1 - 8 participants and $159 for parties of 9 - 12 participants. Climbers must be at least 4 years old. A $25 deposit is required. More details are available at the Member Services Desk. Don’t forget your camera!

 

Kinder Klimb (Ages 4-6)

This fun class focuses on fundamentals of climbing techniques. Participants learn climbing commands and climbing wall rules, play bouldering games, and climb the wall at their own pace. Classes are offered as a five week session.  Please register no later than 48 hrs prior to first class.

Summit One & Two (Ages 7-12)

Combined class caters to each participant’s experience level. No experience is necessary for Summit One, a class for beginning climbers that covers climbing half-way up the wall, bouldering, spotting for others, putting on a harness, climbing commands, and tying a figure eight and follow-through with assistance. Summit Two class covers tying a figure eight and follow-through independently, bouldering a 15 foot section of wall, and climbing to the top of the wall. Classes are offered as a five week session.  Please register no later than 48 hrs prior to first class.

Summit Three & Four (Ages 8-12)

Prerequisite: passing Summit Two checklist. Combined class caters to each participant's experience level. Summit Three covers climbing and identifying specific routes, various climbing techniques such as stemming and smearing, the Yosemite Decimal System, and red-pointing and on-sighting a climb. Summit Four class covers red-pointing a 5.8, on-sighting a 5.7, bouldering four consecutive laps, climbing an overhang without sitting, and identifying and using different holds. Classes are offered as a five week session.  Please register no later than 48 hrs prior to first class.

Try-it! Tuesdays (All Ages)

Want to try something new and exciting? Try climbing The Wall! Equipment rental and initial instruction belays provided for all climbers. Participants must have a signed liability; anyone under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign for them. Youth 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  
Tuesdays, 5:30-10 pm
YMCA Members: Free, Program Members: $10

 

Wall Crawlers (Ages 4 & up)

This class is designed for children with disabilities. Add a new dimension to your child’s development– a vertical one! Through climbing, participants will improve physical fitness and motor skills and gain self-confidence and a more positive self image. Activities include bouldering games to increase coordination and climbing with ropes to gain confidence and courage.
Class is scheduled according to interest.

Belay Certification (Ages 14 & up) &
Leading Certification (Ages 18 & up)

Certification is required for belaying and leading at The Family YMCA Climbing Wall. Participants must be 14 years or older for belay certification and 18 years or older for leading certification. Participants must demonstrate knowledge of proper harness use, knots, tying-in, commands, and proper technique according to The Family YMCA standards for both certifications. Belay certification is required for leading certification. After registration and payment, participant needs to make an appointment with the Climbing Wall Supervisor, who is the only person who can administer the tests.
Cost is $13 for each certification.

 

Introduction to Outdoor Climbing (Ages 13 & up)

No experience necessary! First class is at the YMCA and covers the basics of climbing: safety, harnesses, knots, principles of belaying, commands, and climbing techniques. Next two classes are outside, climbing on rock under the supervision of Climbing Wall staff! Fee includes all equipment.

On Belay Class (Ages 14 & up)

Instruction, practice and testing for belay certification. The class is offered on the first and second Mondays and first Thursday of each month except on holidays (check at Member Services desk for holiday month schedule). The first night (Monday) is an instructional class in which participants learn the necessary skills to pass the belay test. The second class (Thursday) is required and allows participants to practice before the test. The third class (second Monday) is the test. Participants may make an appointment with the Climbing Wall Supervisor/Instructor to take the belay certification test on a different night, but it must be at least one week after the initial class.  Please register no later than 48 hrs prior to first class.
